Trinity Lutheran Church has been participating in the Vicarage Program of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod on and off for many years, dating back to the 1970's. Participation was renewed again in 1992 and was terminated in the summer of 2002. The congregation will take up the prospect of re-entering the vicarage program at the January 2003 Voters' Meeting.
What is the Vicarage Program? Students enrolled at the seminaries of our church body complete a prescribed series of courses in theological education. Please keep in mind that students of our seminaries have already obtained an undergraduate degree (typically a B.A. or B.S.). The normal path of a student at the seminary is two years of course work followed by a year of vicarage and then the student returns to the seminary for yet a final year of course work. The word "vicarage" comes from a Latin root meaning, "in place of" or "substitute." Within our church body, the term has been used for 150 years to denote a student of the seminary who works under the leadership of a Vicarage Supervisor (a pastor serving in a Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod congregation). The Vicarage is to be 12 months. There are weekly meetings with the supervisor. There are also currently two major reports. The year of vicarage is intended to give the student not only experiences in the everyday life of a parish, but also the opportunity to work under the mentorship of his supervisor. The Supervising Pastor must make a recommendation to the seminary as to whether the student is ready and able to serve as a parish pastor for the good of the congregations of the church body. Congregations must apply to participate in the vicarage program through the Council of District Presidents, who in turn bring the requests to the seminaries of our church body (Concordia Seminary, St. Louis and Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne). Assignments are usually announced in late April and the students normally begin their work some time in the summer months. It is best to view the vicarage program as a participation in the mission of our church body by providing students of our church body the opportunity to gain well rounded experiences in a parish setting. Our participation in this program helps our church send well-trained pastors to vacant congregations and mission starts especially throughout the United States, but sometimes around the world.
